Astrid’s family life is something I’ve seen discussed several times. Some think she’s lost her father. Others, her mother. This is my two cents…
The pictures from this deleted sceneare out of the first movie. Here we see (I’m nearly positive) Astrid and Snotlout hugging their fathers goodbye at the docks. (Hiccup, of course, has a much more awkward separation from his father)
So based on this footage, I think’s confirmed that Astrid does have a father. Not only that, but she has a good relationship with him.
The only parent I think is in question is her mother. It’s alluded to that she uses her mother’s axe, so it could be an inheritance or a hand-me-down. (Or perhaps, she was simply running an errand for her mother in the other deleted scene and keeps her own axe out of Hiccup’s clutches).
Personally, I think Astrid has a pretty fortunate family life. She was encouraged and loved and her drive to be a great Viking stems from a well nourished pride and her own personality.
As a snippet I caught in the scene… Stoick says “I want him back, all limbs in tact” (or something like that) FORESHADOWING. If they kept that lil bit in imagine the mind blown fandom when Hiccup actually loses his leg later. Just a thought.
ok so in honor of FINALLY watching httyd2 (which was AMAZING and i am in love with these characters ALL OVER AGAIN) im gonna do some blog-hunting because i desperately need some more animated stuff on my dash
please reblog if you primarily post any of the following:
how to train your dragon (1 or 2)
rise of the guardians
peter pan (original animated or 2003 live action adaption)
omg I’ve always loved Astrid for this. She doesn’t just try and talk to him at a normal level, because she knows he avoids eye contact. He’s used of a life of people LITERALLY looking down at him, so he just escapes by glancing downward when he feels inadequate. But she won’t have it from him— she gets down ON HIS LEVEL and makes him look up. Makes him see what she sees: somebody worthwhile and worth looking straight in the eye.
